Dr. Jean-Ronald LaFond

Jean-Ronald LaFond received the Doctor of Musical Arts  and Master of Music degrees from the University of Michigan and the Bachelor’s degree from Westminster Choir College (Princeton NJ USA). He trained as an orchestral conductor under the celebrated maestro, Gustav Meier for five years and studied composition under Leslie Bassett for three years.

Before becoming a tenor a few years ago, Jean-Ronald LaFond incarnated some 40 baritone operatic roles and an equal number of oratorio solos. As a song recitalist LaFond has given over 400 presentations covering a vast repertoire in 12 languages. As stage director, he received critical acclaim for his stagings of Verdi’s Macbeth, Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Samuel Barber’s A Hand of Bridge for Berlin International Opera. He is also an experienced theater actor, receiving critical and audience acclaim for his remarkable portrayal of Scrooge in A Camden Christmas Carol, a modern take on Dicken’s classic play, produced by Rutgers University, Camden, New Jersey.  His most recent incarnations include Cavaradossi in Puccini’s Tosca and Siegmund in Wagner’s Die Walküre.

LaFond combines modern voice science with traditional operatic techniques and martial arts principles to develop the philosophy, Kashu-do (歌⼿手道), The Way of the Singer. His blog of the same name attracts thousands of readers from more than 60 countries. LaFond’s Kashu-do Studios has locations in New York, Germany (Berlin, Dortmund/Hagen, Düsseldorf, München) and Sweden.

LaFond’s many current professional students sing in major theaters throughout Europe including Deutsche Oper Berlin, Komische Oper Berlin, National Theater Mannheim, Theater Dortmund, Teatro del Liceu, Opéra de Paris, Theater Hagen, Opéra de Marseilles, Theater Graz, Opéra de Nancy, Bayreuth and Bregenz Festivals, etc…Before becoming a freelance teacher, Dr. LaFond held professorships at University of Florida, East Carolina University, University of Delaware and Westminster Choir College.  He currently teaches a full opera curriculum in the Opera Studio at Härnösands Folkhögskola in Härnösand, Sweden, teaches as a guest clinician at the Music College of Lulleå Technical University in Piteå, Sweden and is a regular teacher at the Gothenburg Opera.  With his Kashu-do International Team Of Teachers (KITOT), he presents regular vocal masterclasses throughout the world.
